The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore has introduced a new requirement for employers in the construction, marine shipyard, and process sectors.<\/strong> Starting from September 19, 2023, employers must provide proof of acceptable accommodation for new non-Malaysian work permit holders before they can enter Singapore. This requirement is in addition to the work permit approval process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Employers need to submit documents such as tenancy agreements or contracts with accommodation providers to the MOM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Approval for housing workers in purpose-built dormitories, construction temporary quarters, or temporary occupation license quarters will take about a week. However, employers housing workers in private residential properties, hotels, or hostels should expect the approval process to take around six weeks or longer due to additional checks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Employers who fail to provide proof of accommodation may face suspension of their work pass privileges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The need for this requirement has arisen because the number of work permit holders in these sectors has increased by 19% compared to pre-COVID-19 levels, and there is a need to ensure workers have acceptable accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. The government has been working to increase dormitory bed supply but is encouraging employers to contribute by building their own accommodation, which can expedite approval for their workers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
